Sandblasting
Sandblasting drives abrasive at a surface under high pressure to shear off everything that isn't the base metal — rust, scale, old paint, cured powder coat, undercoating and corrosion pitting. What's left behind isn't just clean, it's profiled: a fine texture across the whole surface that gives the next coating something mechanical to key into.
That second part is the reason blasting matters more than most people expect. You can chemically strip a part and it'll look clean, but a glass-smooth surface gives a coating almost nothing to hold onto. A properly blasted profile is the difference between a finish that lasts a decade and one that lifts at the first stone chip.
We run blasting out of our Carson City shop as a standalone service — plenty of customers just want parts back in bare metal to weld, machine or paint themselves — and as step one of every powder coating job that leaves here.

Bare steel starts oxidizing again within hours, especially in humid weather. If we're coating it too, it goes straight from the cabinet into prep. If you're taking parts home raw, plan to prime or coat them quickly — and keep them dry and off bare fingers.

We look at the metal thickness, the alloy and how bad the corrosion is, then pick a media and pressure that will strip it without damaging it.
Machined faces, threads, bearing bores and anything that shouldn't get cut by abrasive is plugged and covered first.
Abrasive is worked across the whole surface until every trace of coating, rust and scale is gone and the profile is even.
Spent media and dust are blown out of every pocket, seam and cavity, then the part gets checked over under good light.
If we're coating it, the part moves directly to degreasing and masking before flash rust has a chance to start.
Pitting, weld seams, inside corners, textured castings and box sections — abrasive gets into all of it evenly. A wire wheel polishes the high spots and leaves the rust in the low ones.
Filler, hidden rot and old repairs show up the moment the paint comes off. Better to learn that before you've invested in a finish.
Blasting leaves a controlled anchor pattern. That mechanical grip is what stops a coating from lifting later — it's not something a chemical strip can replicate.
Blasting throws dust everywhere and eats consumables fast. We're set up for it, contained, and we clean up after — you just pick up finished parts.

It depends on the size of the piece, how much surface area there is, and how heavy the rust or coating is. A cast iron bench end is a different job than a trailer frame. Call or text 989-289-2298 with photos and we'll quote it — free, and we'll tell you honestly if blasting isn't the right call.
It can, if it's done carelessly. Thin sheet metal, aluminum and delicate castings need lower pressure and a gentler media, which is exactly what our media blasting service is for. We match the abrasive to the part rather than running everything at full pressure.
No — a lot of customers take parts home bare to weld, machine or paint themselves. Just be aware that bare steel starts flash rusting within hours, so have your primer or coating ready to go the same day.
Yes, that's one of the main reasons to blast rather than sand. Abrasive reaches down into pitted areas and pulls the corrosion out of the bottom of the pits instead of just knocking the tops off. Deeply pitted metal will still look pitted — but it'll be clean pitting, not active rust.
Anything that can't take abrasive impact or the dust: chrome you want to keep, glass, plated surfaces, bearings, seals, and parts with sealed cavities that will trap media. Bring parts disassembled and bare where you can. If you're unsure, ask first.
